According to the NY Times, more than 51 were killed and at least 238 were injured in a stampede at a political rally held today in Yemen. Apparently, as the country's president was leaving the stage, thousands of people rushed to get a close look at him. This collapsed an iron fence, crushing people beneath it.
I understand how a stampede can happen in a case where a nightclub catches on fire, but I have never understood how you these things happen at soccer matches or political functions.
